The 2020 vintage started as most years do and harvest was anticipated to e a bit earlier than the previous year. Around July we saw temperatures begin to change, which caused ripening process to slow and result in later picking dates, and we ended up harvesting just a few days apart on most varietals from the previous year. We did experience smoke through the season, but with precautions taken at the winery (bucket ferments) were able to avoid its impact entirely.
Francisca’s Vineyard is a sustainably farmed boutique site and a labor of love that began in 2001. Located at the foot of the Blue Mountains, the vineyard is ensconced in the soft, rolling landscape that enjoys good sun exposure, managed irrigation, and a soil composition of several feet of loess blown over layers of glacial materials. When preparing this site for the vineyard, a boulder of Montana granite was uncovered. It was discovered to be a boulder had been transported thousands of years ago during the Montana Flood, encased within a large chunk of ice deposited in Eastern Washington. A beautifully balanced example of an unctuous and floral varietal, this wine is quickly becoming one of our favorite Forgeron Cellars wines to date.
