In the vineyard

Francisca’s Vineyard is a sustainable, boutique site and a labor of love that began in 2001. At the foot of the Blue Mountains, the vineyard is ensconced in the soft, rolling landscape and enjoys good sun exposure, managed irrigation, and soil made up of several feet of loess blown over layers of glacial materials. When preparing this site for the vineyard, a boulder of Montana granite was uncovered; this boulder had been transported thousands of years ago during the Montana Flood enclosed within a large chunk of ice and ultimately deposited in Eastern Washington.

The year 2019 began with the auspicious potential for an earlier harvest than that of 2018. With this expectation buoyed by favorable, steady temperatures, we were preparing to begin harvest in August when the weather suddenly shifted. With temperatures around the state dropping surprisingly, most of our fruit slowed in ripening, resulting in increased acidity and hangtime, culminating in the finishing of harvest just before an early freeze in October throughout Walla Walla Valley.
