Façon Rouge

2013 Façon Rouge

Façon [FAH-son] is French for the style or way of doing something. Our Façon Blanc and Façon Rouge wines speak to our unique style at Forgeron: inspired by Marie-Eve’s French training and heritage, and decades of experience showcasting Washington terroir.

Façon Rouge pays tribute to the fragrant and dynamic fruit of Grenache-based wines of the Southern Rhône River Valley (Gigondas) in France.

2013 was a very ripe year overall and the final blend ended up being 100% Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. However, most years we like to blend in some wine from warmer sites for a touch of added ripeness. Thus we refer to this as a Columbia Valley wine.

In the vineyard

The warm, dry conditions of the Columbia Valley, are well suited to Rhône varietals. Our result is a rich and full Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre blend.

Appellation Columbia Valley
Vineyard Boushey Vineyard

In the cellar

We co-fermented a bit of Grenache with Syrah then co-fermented Mourvèdre and Grenache together. We aged this wine 16 months in one-to-three-year-old French barrels. Neutral oak will not impart oak flavor, allowing the spice and fruit flavors of the wine to shine. The lively acidity of the Mourvèdre and Grenache are a perfect complement to the Syrah.

Varietal 48% SYRAH, 27% MOURVÈDRE, 25% GRENACHE

In the glass

A Gigondas-inspired Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre, ripe and full-bodied, yet spicy and supple.

NOSE: dark fruit and black olive with meat notes (from the Syrah) raspberry (Grenache), white chocolate, nuttiness, and earthiness (Mourvèdre)

MOUTH: dark fruit and blueberry with a mineral note, and a smooth texture (Syrah and Grenache), pepper, depth and richness, concentrated red stone fruit finish (Mourvèdre)

FOOD & WINE PAIRING: duck confit, Moroccan spice, braised lamb

Another terrific wine from proprietress Marie-Eve Gilla is the 2013 Façon Rouge Red Rhone GSM, which is 48% Syrah, 27% Mourvèdre and 25% Grenache, harvested all in October, that spent 16 months in one- to three-year-old barrels. Its healthy ruby/purple color is followed by lots of Syrah notes of olive, peppery herbs, dark fruits and some meatiness. These flow to a medium to full-bodied, pure, impeccably made 2013 that has beautiful intensity and length. Drink it anytime over the coming 7-8 years. These rock solid releases are made by Burgundy-trained, Marie-Eve Gilla, who created this estate in 2001.

This wine is just under half Syrah with the balance near equally split between Mourvèdre and Grenache. Peppery spices and sappy dark-fruit aromas are followed by juicy dark-fruit flavors that persist. It shows a very pretty styling.
