Façon Blanc

2016 Façon Blanc

Façon means "the way or style of expression," in French, and represents the unique style of Forgeron Cellars, where we blend French heritage and training with years of experience working with Washington terroir.

Façon Blanc is inspired by long, relaxing afternoons on the patios and pétanque courts of Provence. This wine is medium bodied, viscous, clean and refreshing.

The 2016 growing season started fast and furious with an early bud break and we expected a repeat of 2015, the warmest vintage on record. Thankfully temperatures dropped back in early June and through the summer, and we even experienced some unusual rainfalls in September and October. These events stretched the growing season, allowing the grapes to accumulate additional flavors and concentration.

In the vineyard

Grenache Blanc is a vigorous varietal, and Boushey Vineyard is very sandy which helps control the vigor, but we must be very patient and visit the often before we decide when to pick the grapes. Too early and there are no flavors, too late and the resulting wine is too heavy. Francisca Vineyard is a small family operation, LIVE certified, the Viognier there has low vigor, the clusters are tiny, and they bask in the sun and gather full flavors. Crawford is a small, family owned farm located near Prosser in the Yakima Valley. Crawford has a unique Geneva Double Curtain (GDC) pruning system, perfect for white grapes as the foliage shades the fruit but still allows great air drainage. The vineyard is older, and we have to be patient to allow full ripening.

Appellation Columbia Valley

In the cellar

Each lot is fermented in neutral oak at cold temperature. These Southern varieties are prone to oxidation, so the winemaking has to be quite meticulous, we do not prevent air contact but we make sure to minimize oxygen intake after fermentation. Using the neutral oak helps express each lot individuality. We spend quite a bit of times making mock blends before deciding on the ultimate combination.

In the glass

Rich, bursting with flavors while keeping a very focused and refreshing frame.

NOSE: grapefruit, pineapple, coconut, honeysuckle

MOUTH: citrus, pear, lemon, honeydew, creamy mouthfeel balanced with refreshing acidity

PAIRING: shrimp or chicken fettuccine alfredo, fresh seafood

This blend of 60% Viognier, 27% Roussanne and 13% Grenache Blanc displays a brilliant lemon-gold color and attractive aromas of pear, white peach, pineapple, grapefruit, honeysuckle, lemon verbena and white incense. The flavors, as well, are appealing with notes of peach stone, pear skin and saline minerals. On the back, a creamy texture emerges, counterpointed by bracing fruit acids, along with poire and pêche liqueurs, hazelnut and grapefruit zest, followed by a refreshingly crisp finish. 18.5/20
