Façon [FAH-son] is French for the style or way of doing something. Our Façon Blanc and Façon Rouge wines speak to our unique style at Forgeron: inspired by Marie-Eve’s French training and heritage, and decades of experience showcasting Washington terroir.
Inspired by long, relaxing afternoons on the pétanque courts of Provence, the blend pedigree may be French, but this wine is a beautiful expression of Columbia Valley. Winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla loves to make and enjoy white wines and is attracted to these Southern France varieties which have great potential to stand up to the heat we get in Eastern WA. When harvested in time, we can really extract the flavors, fullness, and ripeness while still making an elegant and refreshing wine.
We were very diligent to pick grapes earlier in 2014 as it was a very warm vintage. We separated the hard press wines from the light press to minimize phenol extraction which causes bitterness and heaviness.
The Roussanne is from Crawford & Lonesome Springs Vineyards (Yakima Valley); Grenache Blanc and Marsanne are from Boushey (Yakima Valley), and the Viognier is from Francisca’s (Walla Walla Valley).
Each varietal brings unique characteristics to the wine. The Roussanne brings nuances of white peach, pear, and honeydew, while the Grenache Blanc adds crispness with citrus and spice notes. The Marsanne increases the mouthfeel and adds lemon custard flavors. Adding the Viognier brings ripe apricot and honey flavors and extends the silky texture.
