2018 ANVIL Chardonnay

FRENCH CREEK VINEYARD
YAKIMA VALLEY

The summer of 2018 was one of the hottest years on record throughout the eastern side of Washington. We experienced several weeks of 95-degree and higher temperatures; at long last, a cooling trend arrived in August. The stretch of hot weather allowed an extended hang-time, resulting in appealing, complex flavor. This vintage turned out to be truly remarkable, producing lots with bright, fresh notes and seemingly innate balance.

In the vineyard

Our French Creek Chardonnay outperforms itself every year and this one is no exception. The integration of oak is balanced so beautifully. The long and savory mouth feel showcases an integration of fruit and French barriques. We feel so lucky to be able to produce and release this wine to everyone. French Creek Vineyard really stands on top for Chardonnay production and this wine shows just that.

This is an old-vine Wente clone block planted in chalky, stony soil. Aged for 17 months in French oak, it offers a perfume of lemon blossom, melon and Italian herbs. An unctuousness persists on the palate, with unique notes of lychee, cinnamon, oregano and blue flowers. Granny Smith apple forges its way through an orange-caramel coated finish.

The aromas are generous but subtle, with notes of pear, yellow apple, toast and clarified butter. Full-feeling richly textured flavors follow. A long finish caps it off. SEAN P. SULLIVAN

The 2018 Chardonnay French Creek Vineyard Old Wente Block sports a vivid gold color as well as a medium-bodied, balanced, lively style backed up with notes of Meyer lemons, white flowers, and chalky minerality. It has a kiss of background oak and is a balanced, impeccably made Chardonnay. It too should drink nicely for 2-3 years.
