2016 ANVIL Syrah

The 2016 growing season started very warm, causing an early

bud break. Temperatures dropped back to average in early June and we picked our Boushey Vineyard Syrah in September, knowing it had been given all the time necessary to develop the inherent complexities of the growing season.

In the vineyard

Generally south-facing, this vineyard is located 10 miles west of Red Mountain in the Yakima Valley AVA. The Boushey Vineyard sits atop fractured basalt and soil consisting of silt loam, windblown loess, and deposits from the Missoula floods. The elevation at the highest point of the Boushey Vineyard is at 1,400 feet and combined with layered soils and mild temperatures that allow for longer hang time, the resulting fruit presents amazing phenolic ripeness. Wines made from these grapes are well-balanced with lower alcohol and better acidity, and offer an unblemished expression of the varietal fruit.

Vineyard owner Dick Boushey is widely lauded as one of Washington State’s top growers. The Boushey Vineyard has long been recognized as a top-spot for Syrah in Washington, and we are thrilled to have it be part of our Anvil by Forgeron program of limited production, single vineyard wines.

In the cellar

Having long been enamored with the Syrah being grown here, we felt that the time had come to release an extended barrel-aged example of the fruit from this prestigious site. We hand-harvested fruit from the best block, then hand-sorted the clusters into open-top fermenters. By handling this wine with extreme care, we are able to retain its delightful subtleties and nuances in tact while harnessing the power of this richly colored fruit.

Varietal 100% SYRAH

In the glass

This classically styled Syrah offers nuances of dark fruit, bootstrap, and spice. The pallet is rich and dark with blackberry, boysenberry, violets, and a long finish. This wine is the epitome of balance, with nicely integrated fruit, oak and alcohol. Structured to last, this wine will cellar well into to the 2030’s.

Enjoy with grilled lamb chops.

2016 Syrah, Boushey Vineyard Coming from the Boushey Vineyard in Yakima Valley and brought up in 44% new French oak, the 2016 Syrah Anvil Boushey Vineyard reveals a vivid purple color to go with beautiful notes of blueberries, scorched earth, graphite, and ground pepper. With subtle background oak, medium to full body, and ripe tannins, it offers more purity and elegance than the Façon Rouge release, will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and drink nicely for 7-8 years. -Jeb Dunnuck

Haunting aromas and flavors go so deep for this high elevation, 18-month French oak-aged Syrah. An inky well of tar, bacon fat, tobacco and red fruit are mirrored on nose and palate. Graphite lines the mouth, with a dot of black pepper. Tannins are pronounced and texturally rich with a slight chalkiness – salinity licks the tongue on the finish. This is what we love about this varietal, and in its second vintage, it keeps us wanting more.

With dark red fruits and a wet stone minerality, the 2016 Syrah Anvil Boushey Vineyard wafts with classic black peppercorns spices. Full-bodied, the flavors become shy and quietly subtle, before showing a mineral essence across the mid-palate. Lingering with a rocky, mineral tension, the Syrah becomes almost ethereal on the finish. 201 cases produced.
