In the vineyard

The 2017 vintage was a difficult one to start, coming off one the coldest winters in Eastern Washington’s history. Despite a late frost our fruit survived. As Spring turned into Summer, Mother Nature delivered an ideal growing season, long enough for our fruit to fully ripen and short enough to ensure we could pick it before poor weather arrived.

Appellation Yakima Valley

In the cellar

The Syrah arrived the first week of October, followed by the Grenache and by the last week of the month we had picked all the fruit for this blend. We were able harvest each lot at the ideal sugar and ph levels and had to do only a moderate amount of sorting before the grapes went to tank.

2017 BlackSmith Rouge GSM - "Plump and fruit-forward, with appealing black cherry and smoked spice flavors the linger on a bright finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2023. 877 cases made." — TF
Wine Spectator
The 2017 BlackSmith Rouge is a blend of 37% Grenache, 37% Syrah and 26% Mourvédre that’s wafts from the glass with aromas of dusty cherry and cracked black pepper, with hints of wild strawberry. Medium to full-bodied, the wine turns tarter in the mouth as the red fruit components mingle with distinct black pepper flavors across the mid-palate. Expressions of dusty cherry and strawberry linger in the mouth along with a whisper of spiced orange peel on the mineral-tinged finish. 877 cases were created. It’s quite a lovely wine.
