LET’S GET SERIOUS ABOUT CHARDONNAY

Deep dive into a 5-vintage vertical of Anvil by Forgeron Chardonnay featuring 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021.

Many wine drinkers, be they ostentatious oenophiles or timid tipplers, have suffered the sad sense of Chardonnay Fatigue. Perhaps they were plagued by the presence of one (or twelve) too many New World blowsy bruisers soaked in oak and battered in butter. Maybe they had experienced a rash of Old World Burgundies that put the terrible in terroir. Whatever the reason or style (or decidedly lack thereof), the cookie-cutter copycat nature of so, so many Chardonnays has definitively destroyed much of the joy for those hoping to recapture the magic of that first, fabulous, famously fun Chardonnay that pulsed their palate and left them feeling fanatical. As of the last reliable census counts, Chardonnay is the most planted white wine grape in the world and the most planted wine grape, period, in the United States.  The trend does not seem to be reversing. At Forgeron Cellars, we try to skirt the chasm of Old World and New World that can be so daunting. Our Forgeron Cellars Chardonnay is from Weinbau Vineyard, which is in the Wahluke Slope and clocks in as one of the oldest Chard sites in Washington, having been planted in 1981. For our flagship Chardonnay, the Anvil by Forgeron, we only use Old Vine Wente Clone from French Creek Vineyard in Yakima Valley. Planted the same year as Weinbau, the vines were originally taken from a famed site in Burgundy, France, and planted by the Wente Brothers in California in 1922.   The first Washington Wine month of 2023, March, sees us releasing new Chardonnay vintages of both Forgeron Cellars and Anvil by Forgeron. To underscore the month and the grape, March’s PK's Picks Tasting & Seminar features a five vintage vertical of Anvil by Fogeron Chardonnay. Seating is limited, and these events typically fill up in a hurry, so get your tickets at the links above or call the Woodinville Tasting Room at 425-242-8872 to secure your seats. - PK
