2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
Spring 2009 brought cool temperatures and high wind conditions which led to late bud break and a small quantity of fruit set. The very hot, dry summer (the hottest July on record for many sites) accelerated ripening of sugars and most grapes were picked by early October, earlier than generally practiced in the past 15 years.
The thick-skinned nature of 2009 was written for a wine like this - one that reveals the saturated color, tannin and rock-imbued extractives that come to Cabernet Sauvignon when the best ripening conditions are met. Even with the delicious fruit and grit of a ripe year, this wine remains perfumed and silky with an amazing density and great balance all the way through the dark cherry-tinged and long finish.
With a wine this incredible, the next step is deciding what to pair with it. A simple pairing like a juicy grilled steak would be awesome! However, Braised Lamb Shank would be equally amazing.
Santé!
