2007 Primitivo
Primitivo is a lesser known varietal that is closely related to the Zinfandel grape, however the wines they produce have very distinct differences. The fruit character is less jammy, the structure is more similar to old world wines, with rustic notes of earth and spice, as well as tamed fruit flavors.
Our first vintage of Primitivo is robust with rich dense fruit and regal color. Incredible aromas of cherry wood, boysenberries, braised figs and a hint of white pepper. The mouth is big and chewy with flavors of roasted cocoa beans, bittersweet chocolate, dried berries, pumpkin pie spice and lively acids. Produced in small quantity with only 112 cases, this is definitely a wine that makes you feel on top of the world!
"Nothing shy here; this 10% Primitivo, from the Stonetree Vineyard, lists the alcohol at 15.5%. Dark and musky, lightly earthy and soft, it's a luscious bottle which blankets the tongue with rustic (in a good way) black fruits and exotic spices. For the finishing kicker, barrel aging brings in dark chocolate. Rare and wonderful." Paul Gregutt, November 2010
Primitivo is known for being a food friendly wine and this one is no exception. With the fall and winter months upon us, hearty comfort food is the first thing that comes to mind. We recommend Primitivo braised beef, baked cavatappi and meatballs or pizza with Italian sausage, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms.
