On my rogue wine trip to Walla Walla, I had the pleasure of stopping by Fergeron Cellars (sic) during the wine bloggers conference (the very same conference I crashed many years ago!) Founded in a former blacksmith shop, Forgeron Cellars with founding Winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla at the helm have carved out a vast lineup of wines which pay tribute to the Washington Wine scene while providing a little bit of French flare and style that can be seen in old world wines.
“I purchased the Forgeron Cellars 2007 Barbera in 2010 and stored it in my wine cellar (Wine Storage Bellevue) for 4 years. With that in mind, I decided to decant the wine and see how the flavors and aromas would develop over time.
The color of the wine was a nice shade of dark purple and had its full clarity throughout. In the first 10 minutes, I got a nice bouquet of blackberry, black pepper, dark cherry, blueberry on the nose of the wine. As I tasted the wine I immediately noticed that the tannins were minimal, which caught me as a bit of a surprise, but it was fine because of the nice balance of acidity and the combination of berry fruit on the palate. As the wine opened up (about 30-40 minutes), more of the spice notes were present on the nose and the palate.
This wine will pair well with leaner cuts of beef, pork loin, duck and various cheeses. As a suggestion, I would decant this wine for at least an hour so you get the full flavors and aromas in the wine.”
