2008 Forgeron Cellars "Anvil" Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain, Klipsun Vineyard ($56)
I first tasted this 100% Cabernet at Forgeron's Holiday Barrel Tasting a year ago and found it so impressive that I bought some futures. It has lived up to its promise. Brilliant ruby colored, it exhibits a seductive nose of blackberry, cherry, cassis, crushed roses, sandalwood, mulberry, orange peel and oriental perfumes. The medium full-bodied flavors are deep and mouth encompassing, interwoven with licorice, Swiss chocolate, mocha and Red Mountain earth and minerals. The back reveals sensations of gently squeezed berries, kirsch liqueur, orange peel, roasted nuts, pencil lead and a touch of crème brulée on a moderately grainy texture. The oak is 100% new French, but is so well integrated that it is unobtrusive, followed by satiny sweet-dry tannins. It is approachable now, but merits ten or more years aging. Overall, this wine shows such an admirable seamlessness and elegance that it gets 19.5/20 points.Tweet
