Rand Sealey finds 2009 Sagemoor Barbera a Gallic-Style Italian Varietal

"...comes on like an Italian varietal with a French accent...bright & vibrant..."

2009 Forgeron Cellars Barbera, Columbia Valley, Sagemoor Vineyard ($30)

"This wine comes on like an Italian varietal with a French accent. Deep ruby colored, it emits a rich, smoky nose of boysenberry, cherry, blueberry, & mulberry, crushed roses & spiced incense. The medium-full bodied flavors are bright & vibrant, with dark fruits intermingled with red licorice, cola, & alluvial minerals. The back reveals sensations of macerated berries & blueberries. The typical cherry-like tartness is present, but muted into a more French than Piedmontese character, along with touches of toast & vanilla (from 1-year old oak) that add to the Gallic style. This wine would make an appropriate accompaniment to either pizza or coq au vin. 18.5/20 points."
