"...consistently outstanding... mouthwatering... our resident Burgundian-Washingtonian at the peak of her creative powers."

Fireflies

Hello friends. Our offer today focuses on the lovely wines of Marie-Eve Gilla. The original plan was to offer 2 BlackSmith wines only, but Marie-Eve recently informed me that her 2011 Chardonnay for Forgeron is reaching the end of vintage (expected to sell out in the next few weeks). They’ll be rolling into the 2012 soon, so I’ll include a reoffer for the 2011 at the bottom of today’s offer, since it is a glorious Chardonnay that has been the subject of frequent reorder requests...:

2011 Forgeron Chardonnay - $24.99 (TPU $21.99)

*Originally offered June 10, 2013. Excerpts from original offer:

Marie’s Forgeron Chardonnays are consistently outstanding, always going toe-to-toe with the best Chardonnays produced in Washington, and always offered at tariffs well below those other stalwarts. Her aptitude with Chardonnay has really been on display during these 2 cooler (2010 and 2011) vintages, and this 2011 has been extremely well-received:

Washington Wine Report (Sean Sullivan): “Lightly aromatic with citrus peel, candle wax, toast, spice and a light floral lift. The palate has a rounded texture with creamy, pure fruit flavors energized by a streak of lemony acidity that runs from start to lingering finish. A gorgeous, refined expression of Chardonnay. 94% Chardonnay, 6% Orange Muscat. Weinbau, Kestrel, and Crawford vineyards. Aged in French oak (32% new). Rating: ****/***** (Excellent/Exceptional).”

Wine Enthusiast (Paul Gregutt): “Roughly half of the blend is made from fruit that comes from 30-year-old vines. An addition of 6% Muscat adds a scent of tree fruit, and the lovely citrus and stone fruit flavors are enhanced by a fresh-baked bread note. It has excellent concentration and impeccable balance, plus a long, satisfying finish. 92pts.”

Review of Washington Wines (Rand Sealey): “Here, Marie-Eve Gilla has turned out a beautiful Chardonnay from a cooler than normal vintage. Brilliant gold colored, it offers lovely aromas of apple, pear, peach, vanilla, apple blossoms, acacia flowers and light spices (from the addition of 6% Orange Muscat). The flavors show wonderful vibrancy, along with notes of peach stones, butternut and stony minerals. The back picks up tones of Mandarin orange peel, toasted hazelnuts and a moderate touch of vanilla oak along with light spices. A squeeze of bright citrus juice enlivens the finish. 18.5/20pts.”

That’s plenty of tasting notes, so I won’t add much, except to say that this is a deftly-balanced mix of fruit (green papaya and plantain and nectarine) and bread and earth, all on a mouthwatering frame that perfectly captures the vibrant potential of the cooler vintage. It’s our resident Burgundian-Washingtonian at the peak of her creative powers.
