2011 Forgeron Cellars Primitivo, Wahluke Slope, Stonetree Vineyard ($30)

18.5+/20 points

"Primitivo is closely related to Zinfandel, but has a less jammy, more structured profile. This one offers a deep ruby color & rich aromas of boysenberry, cherry & pomegranate, with scents of crushed roses, anise, orange peel, brambles, cigar box & spiced incense. The flavors are thick & generous, yet focused, marked by notes of licorice, chocolate, French roast & Wahluke scorched earth. The back reveals notes of squeezed berries & dried cherries, with touches of fig, recurring dried orange peel & fruit confit. Bright fruit acids enliven the ripe tannin finish along with generous gratings of nutmeg, clove & pepper. 18.5+/20 points."
