about the Winery & Winemaker...
"Appearances are deceiving when it comes to Marie-Eve Gilla. The petite, soft-spoken French ex-pat is a winemaking force to be reckoned with. Just ask the many grape growers who found their relationships terminated by Gilla because they did not listen to how she wanted her grapes grown. And she's just as exacting in her Walla Walla winery as she is in the vineyards. The result: some of Washington's most elegant wine.
I was first impressed with her winemaking about a decade ago, shortly after she arrived from France. Her style has varied little since. She seems to have found that elusive spot where elegance and sense of place (typically a European notion) and the American propensity for richness and power can co-exist."

Richard Kinssies, Seattle Post-Intelligencer Newspaper, September 2007

I tasted my way through Walla Walla
"You could spend a whole day touring any one of Walla Walla's wine areas. But the one that intrigued me was right in downtown Walla Walla itself...Then up another block to Forgeron Cellars, one of the strongest of the new wineries, and where chardonnay is the star attraction. I was even more impressed however with a striking roussanne..."

Robert Mayfield, Statesman Journal Newspaper, August 2007

Is Walla Walla "the next Napa"?
"In recent years, winemakers Caleb Foster of Buty Winery, Chuck Reininger of Reininger Winery, Brett Isenhower of Isenhower Cellars and Marie-Eve Gilla of Forgeron Cellars have become the talk of the wine community..."

20 Best New Wineries in the World...the Washington investment group that founded this winery definitely did several things right at Forgeron, notably by locking up grapes from premier vineyard sites and by hiring the talented, French-born winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla."

Warm, Welcoming Walla Walla Valley
"Founded in 2001, Forgeron Cellars contracts with twelve top vineyards in the Yakima, Columbia and Walla Walla Valley, to include Pepper Bridge, Alder Ridge, Klipsun, Artz and Boushey Vineyards...  The founding winemaker at Forgeron Cellars has quite a background.  After earning her masters degree in enology and viticulture at the University of Dijon, Paris born Marie-Eve Gilla received hands-on training at local Burgundian wineries and vineyards...  With her extensive training, and Argyle, Covey Run, Hogue and Gordon Brothers in her work portfolio, Gilla was recruited to become founding winemaker and general manager of Forgeron Cellars.  She directed building of the new winery from top to bottom.

Gilla is a hands-on winemaker from the vineyard to the vat. You are just as likely to find her tromping through the vineyards as you are to find her sampling the barrels. The hard work shows in the bottle."

Marie-Eve at ease…
As one who spends her days teasing out the complexity and richness of grapes to create fine wines, Marie-Eve Gilla is at ease in the winemaker’s life. Her work requires her to tap into all of her individual resources-sensitivity, scientific acuity, artistry, ingenuity and business sense. Gilla say’s “In wine there are few truths and many opinions...many opportunities to showcase wines with a soul and a style”

The French Touch                                                                                                                                                     Some very nice tipples among the wheat fields...

...Much of the super-premium action is in the Walla Walla Valley established in 1984. The appellations reputation for quality was established from the start by superb cabernet sauvignon and merlot...

Excellent...easier to come by, wines from Forgeron Cellars...

Marie-Eve Gilla, who came to Washington from Burgundy in the early 1990s and is now the winemaker at Forgeron, says that although she is pleased with many of the wines she has made so far, especially a red blend called "Vinfinity", she prefers to look five or ten years ahead. By that time, the appellations young vineyards will have started to mature and their novice managers, some of whom were raised to farm wheat and sweet onions, not grapes, will have honed their skills. Part of the challenge is learning how to control vineyards and quality grape production in a high-desert climate with long, bright summer days and dark, frosty winter nights. But she sees huge local promise, too.

Europe's Own Land Of The Free

Forgeron Cellars' Gilla came from the University of Dijon to America in 1991, to become what she could not as a young Frenchwoman - a winemaker. 'My goals were to get more practical winery experience, and better my English skills,' she says. 'So I worked my way up from the bottom, washing tanks and barrels at Argyle in Oregon. I moved to Washington, and washed my share of barrels again at Covey Run, but they promoted me to cellar master, then assistant winemaker, then winemaker in the next four years.'
That led to winemaking positions at Hogue Cellars, Gordon Brothers and Forgeron. Gilla says such progress could never have happened for her in France.

WINE OF THE WEEK
"The combination of winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla's skills and top-notch fruit from Boushey, Klipsun, Milbrandt, DuBrul and Alder Ridge vineyards produces a wine that resonates with distinction. The nose of plums, pomegranates, maraschino cherries and cigar tobacco includes a bit of smoky bacon fat, a sign of the splash of Syrah (4%). Incredibly, the palate mirrors the aromatics, focusing on the cherries with a finesse that carries through to a rich and delicious finish. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine."

2005 Chardonnay  Columbia Valley
"Another rich and tasty Chardonnay crafted in Walla Walla. Also barrel fermented on 40% new oak, look for aromas of Fuji apple, pear and toasty crème brulée. "This is quite consistent with the winery's 2004 in terms of style, immediately showing lots of vanilla-laced bourbon barrel aromas, with spice and buttered nuts set in a tight, stylish frame. Fresh, ripe citrus and green apple flavors are crisp and penetrating. It is a well-made Washington take on a good village Burgundy."

"Winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla has a wonderful touch with Chardonnay. She selects vineyards that complement one another and uses her winemaking technique to craft a complex, food-friendly wine. Employing fermentation in 100% French oak, the wine offers aromas of tropical fruits, citrus and vanilla with floral notes and spicy oak. Syrah

2003 Syrah  Columbia Valley  91
"This is 100% Syrah, delicious, fragrant and loaded with spice. It's a blend from several different Washington AVAs, and has just the right mix of citrus, pepper, smoke, spice, acid, toast and tannin, bringing in elements from all of them. The fruit is sweet and brambly: the herbal elements are just right, adding notes of leaf and tobacco. There is a whiff of smoke and bacon fat, and the citrus/acid components lifts it nicely."

2003 Syrah  Columbia Valley  Wine Pick of The Week
"Gilla understands that blending grapes from different sites can add complexity and synergy to a wine. The 2003 syrah is a blend of no less than five Washington vineyards, contributing to the wine's impressive complexity. The wine has deep, rich aromas and flavors that remind me of dark sweet cherries and spices such as pepper, cinnamon and a hint of clove. I also like the way the wine's components (acid, tannins, alcohol, sweetness) play off each other. This important aspect is called structure. This is a great wine for the hearty fare we begin craving this time of year. Try it with a braised shank of lamb or a soup made with a medley of beans or roasted root vegetables."

Richard Kinssies, Seattle Post-Intelligencer Newspaper, September 2007

2003 Syrah  Columbia Valley
"Pure syrah, fragrant and loaded with spice, this has a lovely mix of citrus, pepper, smoke, spice, acid, toast and tannin, melding together elements from all of them. The fruit is sweet and brambly, while the herbal components add notes of leaf and tobacco."

2003 Syrah  Columbia Valley
"Our tasters cried out for spicy lamb from the tandoor oven when they tasted this bold Syrah from Walla Walla's Forgeron Cellars! Marie-Eve Gilla worked her magic with Syrah grapes from several vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley and created a wine that shows power with restraint and finishes with impeccable structure. Look for dark fruits and baking spices on the aromas, followed on the palate with flavors of black cherry and plum with hints of chocolate and clove."

N/V Anvil Red  Columbia Valley   "Outstanding!"                                                                             "Long time Washington Resident Marie-Eve Gilla makes this wine for special occasions with friends, then prices it for everyday drinking- aromatics of blueberries, black cherries, cinnamon and earth. There are more blueberries on the palate with hints of mushrooms and plenty of acidity and some late tannins adding traction. Black olives towards the finish lend this wine to spaghetti and lots of friends"                                                                                                       Wine Press Northwest, Summer 2006
